四川大学南亚研究所与印度和平与冲突研究所
短期学习计划说明

 Selection:

The interested candidates must work on topics related to South Asia. We have not had any interns from China until now, so we encourage the prospective interns to submit a proposal of 500-750 words on matters related to China and India or China and South Asia. Currently, our positions on issues related to WMD are already filled. So we would welcome Chinese students working on China's foreign policy, bilateral relations, regional cooperation and so on.

 Work Environment and Conditions:

 1. There are both paid and non-paid interns and the conditions for the paid interns are that they must submit a substantial research paper at the end of their internship while the non-paid interns must write at least a couple of articles for the website. The format of the articles can be seen from the website. Both paid and non-paid interns are encouraged to write as often as possible for the IPCS of course. In addition, they are expected to take part in IPCS Seminars and Conferences that will be held during their stay in IPCS.

 2. The Interns are provided with a workstation and free internet access for academic and work purposes. In addition, the IPCS has a reasonably well-equipped library, from which Interns are free to borrow books. Work timings are from 10am to 5pm five days a week and from 10am to 1pm on Saturday. Researchers are also allowed to stay overtime and use the Institute's facilities.

 3. The students will of course be expected to work using Chinese language sources as well. In India, we will try and facilitate their interactions and interviews with Indian academics and both current and retired government officials, as a way of getting primary source material. The interns will be guided academically by the senior researchers at the IPCS but are completely free to put forward their own views on any subject.

 4. Selected interns are responsible for arranging their own visas and air tickets to and from India.

 5. New Delhi has a lot of other think tanks and institutions that carry out research in Chinese Area Studies. All are open to receiving guests and students and provide plenty of opportunities for Interns and Researchers to attend seminars and conferences without restrictions.

 Life in India:

 1. The IPCS will help arrange reasonable and well-furnished accomodation for the Interns on a nominal monthly rent. The Interns will have to pay for their own meals and may, if facilities allow, cook for themselves. There's plenty of Chinese restaurants in New Delhi but don't expect much of a Chinese flavour to the food!

2. The IPCS understands that foreign interns are in India for more than just an academic experience and encourages its Interns to travel around and understand India better. There will be reasonable length of holdiays granted for such purposes. In addition, the IPCS's own staff come from different parts of India and are reasonably well-travelled both abroad and in India and will be ready to help Interns both with travel plans and to deal with other problems of life in India.

 3. The cost of living in India, even in New Delhi is quite low when compared to that of China. Travelling by bus and train is cheaper than in China both for short and long distances. However, please note that domestic air travel is more expensive for foreigners than it is for Indians. Also, there are separate and higher entry fees for foreigners to some of India's national monuments like the Taj Mahal.
