Economist Vasant Sukhatme visiting ISAS

Economist Vasant Sukhatme, professor of Macalester College, st.Paulo University,visted ISAS, and made a speech on the Rise of the Giants: Comparative Growth Experience of China and India.

Prof. Vasant Sukhatme firstly made a deep discussion on the national situation of both countries and the influence on the development of Sino-Indian ties brought by governmental policies in the perspective of the theory and status-quo of economic development in both countries. At the same time, he deeply compared China and India in terms of GDP, population, education, health, human resource, foreign investments, finance with a lot of statistics. In the analysis, he held that both countries had undergone a lot in the past 25 years, but still lagged behind some Asian countries, let alone Japan and America. In the mean time, he considered that India need further reform, expand its opening-up extent in economy and accelerate the construction of infrastructure. While China need Strengthen the management and improve its system. When referring to the bilateral ties, he thought that though the bilateral trade increased a lot, yet the scope was not wide, only confined to the trade of goods. In the future development of bilateral ties, both countries need strengthen communication in stuffs, goods and services. China and India have tremendous potentiality in finance and technology and service trade. Though the mutual exchange of the experts in management and manufacture in both countries, such potentiality will be realized. Prof. Vasant Sukhatme also agreed that with the enhancement of economic strength, both countries will get more rights of speak in the international arena. Meanwhile, both countries will have the same challenges.

In addition, our students asked some questions on economy, trade, agricultural reform, and Prof. Vasant Sukhatme answered conscientiously.
